At Barneys, we believe that Growth Groups are one of the most important expressions of our life together as a family of missionary servants and disciples.
We have lots of different types of groups, because we are a church of lots of different people at different stages in their walk with God. Sometimes the groups are made up of people the same age, but we also have groups which are cross-cultural and cross-generational. Most meet weekly, and often they’ll share a meal together. Usually they meet either at someone’s house or at the church.
But whatever form they take, all our groups aim to express combination of the following elements:
- Up – Love for God, which can be expressed in worship, praise, and prayer. This is part of what it means to be disciples.
- In – Love for one another, which can be expressed in sharing and applying the Bible’s truth to each other’s lives, serving one another, meeting each other’s needs, celebrating and mourning with one another through life’s ups and downs. This is part of what it means to be a family.
- Out – Love for others, which can be expressed through building relationships with people in our broader community, seeking to serve them and share the gospel with them. This outward focus can be expressed in different ways depending on the type of group. Some Growth Groups have a shared commitment to loving a particular group of people through friendship, service and sharing the gospel. Other groups send their members equipped with and encouraged by the gospel to their particular places of work, study and leisure. This is part of what it means to be missionary servants.
