Survive Past Five

Sunday 6th June @ 10am
15 King St, Newtown

Please join us in celebrating our confident expectation that our children will not only survive, but thrive, until their fifth birthday and far beyond, just as we have been blessed to do.

A service: to celebrate, raise awareness and pray for mothers and children particularly those around the world whose expectations are vastly different to ours.

A party: with games to play, food to eat and a chance to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.

WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?

In the year 2000, 191 nations including Australia committed to meet eight Millennium Development Goals and pledged to halve world poverty by 2015.

As we look back there is much to celebrate, we are seeing change in our world. For example, last year an extra 400,000 children survived to their 5th birthday than in 2008, and 9 out of 10 children now complete a full primary education.

In partnership with Micah Challenge, Barneys is having a 'Survive Past Five' birthday party to celebrate this progress and, at the same time, show our leaders that people around Australia want our Government to meet our commitment to achieving the MDGs to halve global poverty by 2015.

HOW CAN I HELP?

  • Come along and sign a 5th birthday card which will be delivered to our politicians expressing our desire that the Australian Government keeps the promises that it has made.
  • Invite your network: Using the invitations we’ll provide, invite your extended family, neighbours, mothers’ groups, work colleagues, friends, classmates, sport teams, or even your whole school!
  • Enter the cake competition: There’ll be prizes for best looking and tasting cakes; cakes judged by actual five-year-olds; and the Most Informative 5th Birthday Cake category. Judges will be taking into account the food miles, the use of Fair Trade ingredients, and the carbon footprint of each cake!
  • Help out with food for lunch: Volunteer to cook a dish or cook rice or similar – there's a theme and there'll be recipes available.
  • Bake cupcakes for morning tea (not the cake competition). Can you bake 24 or more?
  • Run kids' games on the day.
  • Coordinate the card writing/signing table.
  • Play a part in the service that we’ll be running, or share your creative ideas.
  • Deliver pamphlets in our letterbox drop.
  • Visit one of the politicians we’re inviting to hand-deliver our invitation and chat with them about taking these issues seriously.
  • Extend the invitation to community groups, particularly ones that work with mothers or with children under five, that are you in contact with.
  • Do you have a five year old? Would they like to be a cake judge?
